Selenium (Methionine) 200ug, Vridian, 90 capsules

£16.97

Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, skin and nails, the normal function of the immune system, normal thyroid function and for the protection of cells from oxidative stress. This ‘oxidative stress’ appears to be a major factor in many human diseases. Selenium also contributes to normal spermatogenesis (the creation of new sperms).

This supplement has selenium in the preferred selenomethione form.

Intensive farming has led to greatly reduced levels of this important mineral in our foods supply.

Ingredients: Selenium (methionine) 200ug in a base of alfalfa, spirulina and bilberry.

For optimal thyroid function you may want to look into L-Thyrosine as well as Iodine. They are the most important co-factors for the production of T3 and T4.

Study:

This is a study studied the association between selenium (SE) and thyroid disease. From that study: “SE, a non-metallic element, is a micronutrient essential for the biosynthesis of selenoproteins containing selenocysteine. In adults, the thyroid contains the highest amount of SE per gram of tissue. Most known selenoproteins, such as glutathione peroxidase, are present in the thyroid and are needed in thyroid hormone metabolism, redox state regulation, and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Some clinical studies have shown that lack of SE will increase the prevalence of several kinds of thyroid diseases. SE treatment in patients with Graves’ orbitopathy demonstrated to delay disease progression and improve the quality of life.

SE supplementation in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis shows a decreased levels of anti-thyroid peroxidase antibody and improved thyroid ultrasound structure. In thyroid cancer, various selenium supplements have shown variable anticancer activity. However, published results remain the conflicting and more clinical evidence is still needed to determine the clinical significance of SE. This article reviews the strong association between SE and thyroid disease and provides new ideas for the clinical management of SE in thyroid disease.”
