What is methylation?

At a very simplistic level, methylation means the transfer of methyl groups—molecules made of one carbon and three hydrogen molecules (CH3)—to different bioactive compounds in the body. These are proteins, hormones, enzymes and more, and have to be methylated to function perfectly.

For instance, methylation is needed for the production of certain vitamins. It is also needed for the synthesis of amino acids, neurotransmitters, red blood cells, DNA, RNA. It also produces some antioxidants that are involved in cardiovascular, neurological, reproductive health, detoxification and energy production.

This is a study on the links between B vitamins and depression. This is from that study: “Vitamins are dietary components which are necessary for life. They play a major role in health and their deficiency can cause symptoms of psychiatric disorders. B vitamins serve proper functioning of the methylation cycle, monoamine oxidase production, DNA synthesis and the repair and maintenance of phospholipids. Vitamin B deficiency could influence memory function, cognitive impairment and dementia. In particular, vitamins B1, B3, B6, B9 and B12 are essential for neuronal function and deficiencies have been linked to depression. We discuss the causes of depression and the neurochemical pathways in depression. In particular, we provide evidence that vitamin B contributes to the complexity of depressive symptoms.”
